Hello...was planning a trip to do the out and back on the Silver Comet and Chief Ladiga trails first week of April.

Wondering about the 'hilly section' and the road to ride on. Are you actually riding on Hwy 278, and if so...how busy of a road? Looks to be about 14 miles of relatively hilly terrain?

Would appreciate comments from folks who have ridden this section. We are in better than average cycling experience and condition.

Thanks,
Pat

No, you are not riding on 278. There is trail in this area. But it isn't on the railroad bed. I think that part is still used by trains. A couple of miles after leaving Rockmart the trail runs parallel to 278 for about three miles, but it is well separated from the highway. It turns south away from the highway and sometimes parallels the railroad, crossing it several times. Here’s my map I prepared before our ride. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/26398845

YES it is hilly—hillier than 278. It was a bit much for me, but I’m well into my 70s.

Thanks Pat. Let me know What you think of Mt. Trashmore after you ride it. I walked it. I'd like to know what a better than average rider thinks of it.

Hi,
The hilly section was a serious challenge for me on a recumbent trike.
At one point the GPS was showing 1.5 miles an hour(going toward Anniston). Coming back on the same stretch, I forgot about the switchback going downhill. I will not make that mistake again. That was my first and last time to be on 2 wheels on a recumbent trike.
It is a wonderful and unique trail that makes for a great ride.
Enjoy the ride!

Five miles of serious hills on the east side of Cedartown, GA, the remainder of the hills to Rockmart, GA are manageable. Be careful on the curves as sight is limited and riders go fast.
