Amtrak from ATL to Aniston AL

Howdy. I'm going to be in Montgomery for some training later this year and wanted to ride the trail. An option I was considering is driving up to Atlanta, taking the train to Anniston, and riding back to Atlanta. I wanted to see if anyone had experience with this in the past and could offer advice. Additionally, if you have experience with Amtrak in general any advice would be appreciated.

Doing initial research things I have found:

Bikes can't be checked but seem to be able to be boxed and checked.

Anniston does not have checked bag service (limiting my terminus in ATL). Unsure how this affects the unloading of bags.

Only one train per day and it's a morning one

No go, no bike loading or unloading at Anniston :(

Are we sure you can't check a bike? I input an Atlanta-to-Anniston trip on the Amtrak website, and one of the train services listed is Bicycle.

Update: When booking on the Amtrak website, it's not until you go to checkout that you see that Bicycle service is "sold out" (actually it's just unavailable). I called Amtrak and was told it's because the Anniston station is unmanned, so they can't unload bikes like another user stated.

I suggested Amtrak make this service available, especially in view of the newly opened 6-mike segment that puts the eastern trail terminus right at the train station. If you'd also like to see this change, send a recommendation at https://www.amtrak.com/email-us
